Delaying the first flush

By delaying the timing of the first flush at the right time, growers can
harvest fine, firm mushrooms for four to five days. However, many
growers delay the first flush too late. The only way to delay the first
flush is to lower the compost temperature before you start to pick t
he mushrooms. If the compost temperature is 19oC or even lower
prior to harvest, then the mushrooms will grow slower so that you
can pick a very good quality. To reach a compost temperature of
19oC the air temperature in the room must be reduced to 16.5oC,
or lower, before the first flush. This is only possible two days before
harvesting, when the largest mushrooms are around 1 cm in size. If
you reduce the air temperature any sooner, more – or too many-
.mushrooms will develop

I often see growers trying to check the growth of the mushrooms on
the first or second picking day by lowering the air temperature. But
this has no more effect on the speed of mushroom growth. The
temperature difference between the compost and the air will increase,
with higher evaporation as a result. And evaporation means growth!
Lowering the air temperature also leads to poorer quality mushrooms
with more scales and discolouration, which will mainly become visible
.post harvesting

The compost temperature rises during the second day of the flush
You can also have the air temperature gradually rise in parallel. From
16oC to 18oC on the final picking day. This keeps the difference between
the compost and the air temperature small. The advantage of this is good
.quality mushrooms and enough activity in the compost left over for the second flush

!Only the compost temperature before the flush determines the speed of the first flush
